Swim Southland - Development Squad Opportunities

Talent ID Squad

Monday 4 - 4:30pm & 4:30pm - 5:30pm weekly during term time

Coach: Katrina (Development Officer for Swimming Southland)

The purpose of this squad is to develop swimmers' skills and confidence while introducing them to the world of competitive swimming. This begins with Chocolate Fish Meets and progresses to Swimming Southland local meets, where swimmers can participate as "Have a Go" competitors.


Squad Selection: Entry into this squad is by invitation only and is determined by our Development Officer.They regularly visit clubs and schools and will personally approach swimmers who they feel would benefit from additional development and progression in their competitive swimming journey.


Talent ID Squad Expectations:

  • Swimmers will attend training sessions regularly and must inform the coach in advance if they are unable to attend
  • Invoices will be issued by Swimming Southland and must be paid by the due date
  • Pool entry is not included in the squad fees and must be paid to reception prior to entering the pool
  • Swimmers are expected to cooperate with the coach and follow all instructions
  • Upon joining the squad, swimmers should be capable of swimming 50 meters continuously and smoothly in freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke
  • Swimmers are expected to participate in at least one swim meet per term


Participation Requirement: If a swimmer has not participated in a meet after two terms of being in the squad, their position within the squad will be reviewed and re-assessed


Skills to be learned:

  • Clock reading
  • Diving 
  • Streamline technique
  • Tumble turns
  • Stroke technique (Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke & butterfly)
  • Underwater skills (dolphin kicks, breakouts)
  • Race day preparation and post-meet review
