APPOINTMENT OF SWIMMING SOUTHLAND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Oscar van Stekelenborg as the Development Officer for Swimming Southland.

Oscar brings 29 years of experience to the position after starting his coaching career at the Mosgiel Swimming club in 1981 followed by a stint in Wellington and for the past 18 years has held various coaching positions in Invercargill.

Oscar has also had a significant part to play with the Development Programme at Splash Palace over many years and this has enabled many young swimmers to move through to competitive swimming.

Michelle Burke, Penny Tapper, Richard Adamson, Stephanie Laughton and Becky Dooley are to name a few, that have achieved Commonwealth or National honours under Oscar’s guidance. There are also numerous swimmers who have achieved medals at Age Group Championships.

In his role, which is funded by ILT Foundation, Invercargill Licensing Trust and the Community Trust of Southland, Oscar will concentrate on the School Learn to Swim programme in conjunction with Splash Palace, assist clubs to develop pathways from Learn to Swim programmes to competitive swimming, and other programmes which will help improve the swimming culture in Southland.

The Swimming Southland Management Committee wishes to congratulate Oscar on his appointment and look forward to his first day on the 16^th November 2010.
